MANCHESTER United fans have asked the club’s management to sign Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi from Leicester City ahead of the forthcoming 2019/20 season to enable them mount a serious challenge for the English Premier League.
Over the last two seasons, Ndidi, 22, has established himself as the mainstay of Leicester City’s midfield where he is an ever-present regular. Last season, which was his first with the club, following his transfer from Genk in Belgium, Ndidi was voted as the Leicester Young Player of the Year.
During the 2017/18 season, Ndidi won 138 tackles and he has now gone six better during the last campaign with 144 tackles, which saw Leicester finish in ninth place in the league. As a result, Manchester United fans have asked the club to sign him next season as a replacement for Ander Herrera who is leaving the club at the end in the summer.
A Manchester Evening News poll of 6,315 of the club’s supporters indicated that the fans consider Ndidi is the best option to replace Herrera. United are looking to sign at least one midfielder in the summer transfer window with Herrera set to leave and Marouane Fellaini ending his association with the club in January following his move to Shandong Luneng Taishan in China.
With the future of Paul Pogba also up in the air, the club is in dire need of midfielders if it is to make a serious challenge for the title next season. During the last campaign, Manchester United finished sixth in the Premier League table, missing out on the Uefa Champions League with a mere 66 points compared with the 98 amassed by rivals Manchester City who won the title.
In the online poll of Manchester United fans, Ndidi came tops when they were asked who the club should buy with 35% of the vote. This compares with 26% who voted for Monaco midfielder Youri Tielemans, 21% who wanted West Ham’s Declan Rice and 18% who believe Paris Saint-Germain’s Adrien Rabiot should be signed.
