SUPER Eagles playmaker Alex Iwobi increased his stock yesterday by scoring his first home goal for Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in the Gunners’ 4-0 win against visiting Watford in an English Premier League fixture.
Fast becoming a regular starter in the Arsenal team, Iwobi, 19, scored his first Premier League goal away to Everton last month and has now capped it with his first home goal. He helped Arsenal secure three points at the expense of compatriot Odion Ighalo, who had a disappointing game and was replaced in the 46th minute.
Iwobi scored after 38 minutes courtesy of an assist by Alexis Sanchez, who laid the ball into the path of the youngster after a delightful build up. He nearly increased his tally in the second half but his shot cannoned off the cross bar after more good build up by the Gunners who were always in control of the game.
Now, a full Nigerian international, the impressive Iwobi was later substituted in the 74th minute after Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger decided to rest him. Coming off to a thunderous applause, Iwobi was replaced with England international Theo Walcott who scored Arsenal’s fourth goal.
