FORMER Super Eagles skipper Vincent Enyeama has expressed delight at being honoured with a Fifa 16 Ultimate Team of the Week plaque after he was voted as the world’s goalkeeper of the week by the global football governing body.
After performing heroics for his club Lille in the French league over the weekend, Enyeama was picked as the world’s best goalkeeper for the Week 24 Team by the football body. This season, Enyeama has been in impressive form for his club keeping them in mid table despite the rest of the team not performing too well.
This was the first time Enyeama has made the Fifa 16 Ultimate Team of the Week and the 33-year-old was presented with the plaque yesterday. Enyeama is currently the subject of intense debate within Nigerian football circles as new Super Eagles head coach Samson Siasia wants to re-invite him back to the team for this month’s African Nations Cup qualifiers against Egypt.
Enyeama said: “This is how goodness and mercy will follow you all this month of March. First day of the month and Fifa gave me a trophy for hard work, dedication and success.
“Merci Fifa. I want to wish everyone reading this message a wonderful month of March and as God did it for me, so will God will do it for us.”
In Fifa’s list, Enyeama made the team along Jetro Willems of PSV, Miguel Layún of Porto, Miranda of Inter Milan and Morales of Levante. Midfielders in the team include Mahmoud Dahoud of Borussia Monchengladbach, Thomas Müller of Bayern München and Hans Vanaken of Club Brugge, while the strikers are Carlos Tévez of Boca Juniors, Edin Džeko of AS Roma and Zlatan Ibrahimović of Paris Saint-Germain.
Last year, goalkeeper Enyeama retired from international football following a bitter disagreement with Super Eagles head coach Sunday Oliseh. Last week, however, Oliseh resigned following repeated disagreements with the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and U23 coach Siasia has been put in temporary charge of the team and wants the goalkeeper back.
Siasia has said he wants Enyeama in the squad for the for the home and away qualifiers against Egypt on March 23 and 29. Nigeria’s most capped player ever who played for the national team for 13 years, Enyeama has not yet agreed to return to the Super Eagles.
