Rauf Aregbesola, Osun State Governor has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to declare the presumed winner of the June 12th 1993 Presidential Elections, the late Chief MKO Abiola (former president). He said this in a visit of the African Development Bank at the Government House on Tuesday.
Aregbesola commended President Muhammadu Buhari for revalidation of the historic event, noting that the injustice done 25 years ago by the Babangida-led junta was now being addressed by another General, although a retired one.
According to him, Nigerians shunned religious and ethnic biases and voted massively for Abiola and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, his running partner. They are both Muslims, stressing that what happened was a watershed in the political history of Nigeria.
“We believe he must be declared the President and recognised as such with all rights and privileges accorded to him. But he has been recognised as a recipient of yet to be fully declared mandate through a posthumous national honour, the highest national honour reserved only for Presidents,” he said.
